Kaoru: I just hate to leave you twisting in the wind, Hikaru. Besides, though you called her a toy... you're actually quite fond of Haruhi, aren't you? You sure like to touch her...
Hikaru: Huh?!
Tamaki: What?!
Hikaru: Don't say such imbecilic things, Kaoru.
Tamaki: Yes! There are things better left unsaid!
Hikaru: I'm not attracted to that little raccoon.
Tamaki: Who you callin' a racoon?!!! You dare insult...?
Volume 3, Chapter 11
Haruhi: *pushes him away from the cookies* Argh! Hikaru, you're in the way!! Get out! You're such a brat!!
Hikaru: Stupid! I'm helping you! I'm turning a boring cookie into an artistic one! And are you sure I'm Hikaru? Kaoru's no different...
Haruhi: When he's on his own, Kaoru is calm and relatively normal. The keyword being relatively. You are loud and crazy even when you're on your own. And you have a filthy mouth.
Hikaru: Hmm... *grins* Is that so? You're great.
Haruhi: I wasn't complimenting you.
Hikaru: Hmph. It sounded like a compliment.
Haruhi: I was actually speaking with a bit of malice.

Hikaru: I don't get it. Why do all these old stories excite you so? Besides, can't that guy tell that we don't care about him at all? Haruhi's heart has no room... for him.
Haruhi goes over to Hikaru and slaps him.
Haruhi: Hikaru, that's not something you decide. I won't let you insult my friend any further.
Hikaru: Come on... *stands up* Who cares about other people? Look, we're the ones who are your friends!! *runs upstairs*
Kaoru: Oh! Hikaru!! Wait!
Tamaki: Ahhh... Their world is still... very small.

Kaoru: Hikaru. I'm coming in. Hey, feeling hot? Got carried away?
Hikaru: Shut up. Kaoru, you were annoyed as well.
Kaoru: I have better control over my emotions. Stupid Hikaru. You flung your feelings at her like a child. It was too much, even for Haruhi.

Kaoru: I don't think Hikaru is conscious of it, but he really cares about Haruhi a lot. But all he knows is how to throw his feelings at others, so he ends up acting like a possessive kid. Haruhi: Yeah, but we're heading back now.
Arai: Oh. Then why don't I drive you back? Let me go ask. I heard the thunder. It's gonna rain soon.

Hikaru: Hmph. Don't bother. We'll get a taxi. We don't need your-

Tamaki takes the phone from Kaoru.
Tamaki: Hikaru! You didn't see her get in the car, did you? If not, go back! Go back and find Haruhi.
Hikaru: Huh? No, milord. Not in this thunderstorm...
Tamaki: You jerk!! Go back right now!! How dare you leave a girl behind in the rain!! Before you throw a fit like some jealous brat, think about how others might feel!! Haruhi is afraid of thunder!!
Hikaru: *hangs up the phone* What the...? How was I supposed to know? She didn't tell me.
Haruhi: I hope there won't be thunder.
Haruhi: Did you hear something just now?
Hikaru: *runs back* Crap! How was I supposed to know?!
Volume 5, Chapter 20
Hikaru enters a church.
Hikaru: Haruhi? You in here? Haruhi?
Narrator: Nothing can be communicated without words. But if you really care about someone...
Hikaru: How did you know?
Haruhi: Uh... Wild guess.
Narrator: ... Even the smallest details are important to notice.
Hikaru finds Haruhi huddling under the altar, scared and shivering.
Hikaru: Haruhi.
Haruhi: *looks up with tears in her eyes* Hikaru...
Thunder booms and Haruhi hits her head on the table.
Haruhi: Ouch!!
Hikaru: You...
Hikaru spots the cloth on the altar and wraps it around Haruhi. He also places his headphones around her ears before sitting next to her and holding her close to his side to get warm.
Hikaru: So... The common folk find peace in narrow places, do they? Their homes are small too.
Haruhi: *places her hands on the headphones* These are wet and gross.
Hikaru: Don't complain. Just sleep until the rain stops.
Haruhi really falls asleep.
Hikaru: *thinks* Is she really falling asleep? Haruhi... I'm sorry.

Kyoya: By the way, Kaoru. You meant for Hikaru to learn some compassion on that date. Did you think about the possibility that he might fall in love?
Kaoru: Oh, that... That won't happen yet. After all, Hikaru is still an idiot.
