Hmm, the probability of this pairing has gone up a notch for me ever since V3C8 and V7C28. In V3C8, Kyoya comes on to Haruhi, telling her that he could go after her anytime as a man, and how, as a woman, she wouldn't be able to stop him. Haruhi, however, does not panic and replies reasonably that he would never go after her because he has nothing to gain from it. That stops Kyoya as he laughs, calling her "interesting". When he asks if she understands, she answers yes, saying that he was just trying to be kind - playing the villain to teach her a lesson. Kyoya doesn't reply, though he gets an expressionless look on his face. When he leaves the room, he secretly smiles as he remembers Haruhi's smile when she says that she understood. There is a feeling of something more behind what Kyoya did.
Then, in V7C28, we get an episode centered on Haruhi and Kyoya. Kyoya is dragged into a department store by the other Host Club members, and runs into Haruhi while there. There are some nice moments between the two of them as Haruhi learns more about the mysterious Host Club vice-president. Kyoya, in fact, busts a merchant at the department store - revealing that he is selling counterfeit goods. Kyoya smoothly tells Haruhi he only stepped in because he could tell the woman about to buy something was from a wealthy family (by her expensive ring), and he could benefit from a connection with her. However, Haruhi realizes that Kyoya couldn't have seen the woman's ring. She confronts him, saying that perhaps Kyoya stepped in because the merchant had been rude to Haruhi earlier. She goes on to say that the actual benefit he seeks from Tamaki and the other club members may not be something tangible - it may be something else... The two are interrupted before Kyoya can respond, but later, Kyoya continues their conversation, saying that Haruhi was trying to suggest that he gains something intangible from his relationship with her. Haruhi has a 'You're right. What was I thinking?' sort of look, but Kyoya replies with that secret smile of his that it's an interesting analysis.
So, does Kyoya actually like Haruhi? It's too vague to really say for sure, but if he does, he has tough competition in the form of Tamaki and Hikaru. We'll see if Hatori-sensei will give us more of this unlikely - yet appealing - couple.
What about the anime?:
While the anime left the romance open-ended, some KyoHaru fans can perhaps take some comfort in the fact that Kyoya's father wants Haruhi to be Kyoya's bride in the future. Of course, Tamaki's father wants the same for his son. Haruhi's just very popular. Kyoya and Haruhi actually share a lot of screen time together, a lot of which can be dismissed as background stuff. Still, that background stuff, like in Episode 22 (why is Haruhi so interested in looking over Kyoya's shoulder? XD), provides quite a lot of content for fans to make icons, wallpapers, etc. It even provides fodder for fanfiction writers to twist it any way they wish.
