Krys's Thoughts:
Being one of the Hitachiin brothers, Hikaru loves to flirt with and tease Haruhi. When Haruhi is eating her ginger cookies (V1C3), Hikaru is the one who bites a piece off her cookie, which is still in her mouth. In V2C5, Kaoru even says that Hikaru is especially fond of Haruhi since he likes to touch her so much (later we find out it's all part of a script, but how much of it was true, do you think? ^_~). In V5C20, Haruhi and Hikaru go out on a date. Of course, Hikaru was tricked into it by Kaoru, though he has no idea. They spend the day together doing things and seem to have a lot of fun. Then an old friend of Haruhi's named Arai bumps into them, and Hikaru gets very upset. He has problems with Arai because he is a reminder that Haruhi has a life and friends outside of the host club, while Hikaru and Kaoru still have a very small world.. He runs off, leaving Haruhi alone. It begins to rain, and Tamaki demands that he go back, revealing that Haruhi is afraid of thunder. Hikaru runs back before he finds her shivering underneath the altar of a church. They're on good terms again.
Then, in V8E32, they have another moment when they both fall into a trap and are stuck in a net together. Because of that, they are in very close proximity and Hikaru has the cutest blush... They are even on the same team during the school competition of the red vs. white teams. All these events point towards Hikaru having romantic feelings for Haruhi, but he doesn't acknowledge them on his own. In Chapter 50, it's revealed that the second years have an opportunity to go to France. This, of course, brings up all kinds of questions concerning Tamaki and his mother. Haruhi's speculations and concerns about Tamaki's feelings regarding going to France and his mother upsets Hikaru. It bothers him that Haruhi thinks about Tamaki, and he doesn't know why... Kaoru reveals what he's known all along - Hikaru loves Haruhi.
The cat's out of the bag, as now, Hikaru deals with the realization that he loves her (C51). He's very confused, having been blind to it the whole time. In fact, he goes to Mori's to try and figure things out. Mori lends him an empty room where he ponders over his feelings. He even makes a little chart - he knows that he likes Haruhi as well as Tamaki (and there's a question mark regarding Haruhi's feelings towards Tamaki, but Kaoru... Hikaru doesn't know Kaoru's feelings. The next day at school, Hikaru, now aware of his feelings, acts awkwardly around Haruhi, blushing and running away from her. Later on, he finds Kaoru looking out the window with a look of adoration. He's about to ask Kaoru what he's looking at, when his twin calls to Haruhi. Kaoru smiles and laughs with delight as he talks to Haruhi down below, and Hikaru is in the background, having finally realized his twin's own feelings.
Taking Kaoru into account, Hikaru decides he'll go on pretending - he tells Kaoru it could be the two of them again, like always, with Haruhi as a "sister". Kaoru, however, reacts unexpectedly. He yells at Hikaru about not handing Haruhi over to someone with half-hearted feelings. Hikaru can only stand in shock at such a passionate outburst from Kaoru. In the aftermath of that fight (C52), Hikaru stays over at Mori's for a few days. He doesn't know what he should do, and believes that Kaoru hates him.
Kaoru shuts himself off from Hikaru at school, and spends all the time with Haruhi, just the two of them. Hikaru is upset, both by his distance from Kaoru and the fact that Kaoru and Haruhi look so cozy together. He's very depressed about the whole situation. Hunny and Mori drag him to an amusement park, where he later sees Kaoru confessing to Haruhi and kissing her on the cheek. He didn't hear their conversation though, or he would've known how much Kaoru cares for him. Angered at Kaoru's intimacy with Haruhi, he runs away into the park crowd.
In Chapter 53, Hikaru finds out what Kaoru has been doing the whole time - by being cold to him and pursuing Haruhi, Kaoru has made Hikaru realize the depth of his feelings, stirring him into action. Hikaru is definitely going to do something about his feelings, but the 'how' is still a mystery. However, Kaoru is supporting him, so who knows how these twins, combined, will try to win Haruhi's heart for Hikaru. He knows that he must still be just a friend in Haruhi's eyes, with Tamaki being a more likely candidate for her, but he hasn't given up.
Things aren't looking good for Hikaru though, because Haruhi has started to develop feelings for Tamaki. She's acting strangely around the host club king, blushing and running away from him, much to Hikaru's annoyance and fear. Has he already lost the war without even a chance to battle? Hikaru is trying his best to keep a lid on his emotions so he won't burst out in any tantrums, and is also trying to be more considerate and gentlemenly towards Haruhi. He's doing his best in order to win her over without it being obvious that he's doing so. Unfortunately for him, Haruhi is preoccupied with her newfound realization about Tamaki.
Hikaru, however, does not give up, and eventually confesses to Haruhi (V13C61). However, she later rejects him, much to his disappointment. He wonders if it's because she loves Tamaki, and while she denies it, he can see she does have feelings for the host club president. However, she still finds Tamaki to be an annoying person at times, and Hikaru takes that to mean he still has a chance. While Hikaru is the one who urges Tamaki to open his eyes and face his true feelings, he has not yet given up the chase. His actions are honorable, but has he ultimately prompted the inevitable? Can he win Haruhi's heart, or is it already lost to him?
What about the anime?:
The anime left the romance open-ended, but Hikaru and Haruhi did share some nice moments together. It is made quite obvious that Hikaru likes Haruhi - we know that Kaoru sees it himself in Episode 21. However, nothing really definite comes of it as the Hikaru/Haruhi pairing fades to the background in the last episode. HikaHaru fans do get a teeny moment when the Host Club is rushing down to the garage. As the Ohtori police force begins to surround them, Hikaru pushes Haruhi behind him in a protective gesture. It's not much, but I'd like to think that the anime creators were sending out a tiny nod to HikaHaru fans. (Then again, it might just be wishful thinking on my part. XD;; Lol, I'm such a shipper fanatic.) Still, it's actually a very nice pairing, and fans can be happy for the HikaHaru moments that did show up in the anime.
