Romance Record:
Arai is the first to actually confess to Haruhi in her middle school days. Unfortunately for him, she didn't know he was confessing. XD;;
Krys's Thoughts:
Haruhi and Arai went to the same middle school and seemed to be good friends then. Haruhi hasn't really been keeping contact with old friends since coming to Ouran. Arai is attracted to Haruhi, but was rejected by her (without her knowing it). He basically confessed to her, wanting to go out, but she misunderstood. Now, it seems he still has a bit of a crush on her, but he knows that nothing will happen between them. The fact that she didn't understand his confession was a sign that she wasn't interested in him. Haruhi responds to his feelings a year later - sorry for not realizing it at the time. Still, Haruhi and Arai remain friends and only time will tell if they keep in touch.
What about the anime?:
Arai and Haruhi are able to catch up when they meet each other at Misuzu's pensione. It seemed like they were good friends back in middle school, and they start talking as if they never stopped keeping in touch. Nothing much is changed from the manga about Arai and Haruhi's relationship. Arai is still kept as sweet as he is in the manga, and I actually find it rather sad that we don't see him again. Arai has his simple guest appearance in the anime series for Episodes 15-16, but after that, we don't hear about him anymore.
